John Krasinski and Paramount’s (PARA) “IF” won the weekend at the box office with a $35M debut. The live action/CGI hybrid movie starring Ryan Reynolds was poorly received by critics but audiences gave it an A CinemaScore. Overseas, “IF” grossed an estimated $20M from 52 markets for a global cume of $59M.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: 20th Century and Disney (DIS) “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” placed number two with another $26M as the movie crossed the $100M mark domestically. Behind it was Lionsgate’s (LGF.A) horror pic “The Strangers: Chapter 1” with a better-than-expected $12M. Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal’s “The Fall Guy” placed number four with $8.5M in its third outing. Rounding out the top five, MGM Amazon Studios’ (AMZN) “Challengers” grossed an estimated 2.9M from 1,938 locations.
